Frequently asked.
How does Gnothi work?
You select a topic you'd like to reflect on or write about. Gnothi uses AI to dig up passages from known sources in western philosophical tradition that speak to your selected topic, paraphrases it in modern terms, and serves up three 'prompts' to help get your reflective juices flowing.
Does it cost anything?
Gnothi is completely free while in beta. The plan is to delineate between free and supporter accounts via a low-cost, monthly subscription at some point.
We're adamant about avoiding ads and other methods of generating revenue that aren't consistent with our vision for Gnothi, but we'll need to figure out how to keep the lights on and fuel development at some point.
What sources does Gnothi use?
All of Gnothi's sources are in the public domain. Right now, we draw reference passages from the western philosophical canon. You can apply filters in the app to specify whether you want to draw from the entire canon, or from particular periods. e.g. Ancient, medieval or modern.
We do plan to add more sources to the app in the future.
Why philosophy?
The ancients (and not-so-ancient) have spilled plenty of ink addressing the human experience, but this material can be inaccessible or difficult to get into for alot of us!
People are largely the same today as we've always been: Same brains. Same problems. Same struggles. So why not make tapping into these helpful insights easier?
Mobile only?
Gnothi is designed to be used on a mobile device. It'll technically work on a desktop browser, but the experience doesn't consider that context. If you really want to log in from a desktop browser, you can, it just won't be optimized for that use case.
